Food business startups still on the rise! E-mail

I just read a great article on WSJ about people leaving the corporate world to start a food business, and it's certainly something we've seen a lot of over the past year. So many people are being laid off and having a hard time finding equivalent-level jobs - if a job at all - and are deciding to "go for it" with their own business. Considering that everyone likes to eat, and many like to cook, the food industry is a natural draw. Not only that, but the specialty food industry has grown despite the recession, at a rate of over 3% (now $50+ billion, just in retail). We've benefited from this greatly, specifically in our Launch division, as many of these startups have seen the tremendous value in our services/programs, including our Viability Analysis, Capital-Raising Preparation, and Go-To-Market program.

Food industry technology, marketing trends, and retail format innovation PDF Print E-mail

Progressive Grocer recently published a good article discussing the technology, marketing trends, and retail format innovation that is creating a change within our industry between now and 2015. Based on their findings, Nielson gives their recommendations for companies to focus on for the next 5 years. Interestingly, all of the recommendations that they stated are areas that we currently help clients with now.

The first recommendation is to develop or buy online/digital/social marketing expertise.

We have solid social media, marketing and PR packages that have helped our clients increase their presence within these outlets and get the attention their company deserves, direct to their targeted consumer.

Traditional media is showing to be a diminishing return; social media along with the development of technology of smart phones continues to grow and is becoming the leader.

While FoodLaunch excels in traditional media/marketing, we have also developed some of the most successful online businesses and top e-commerce platforms in our industry – an area that Nielson states to be one of the biggest winners by dollar share gains. This confirms that we are on the right path and cutting edge in helping our clients be as successful as possible.

Confirmation: Specialty Food Sales UP despite recession - even in Detroit! E-mail

Our CMO, Chris Colby, just forwarded a great article to me confirming what we've seen in our industry; specialty food sales are up despite the recession, as US consumers are eating out less, and cooking more at home. You'd naturally think that luxury items such as specialty foods would be among the first to go in a household that is cutting back, but specialty foods are "affordable luxuries" that consumers will reward themselves with when they are cutting back in OTHER areas.
